Police in Carthage, Missouri were prepared for the worst when they responded to a call about an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. But they were not prepared for what they did discover.

In the basement of the home was a 6 ½ foot long American alligator.

The officers called in two zookeepers from the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, who covered the animal’s eyes and taped its mouth shut before carrying it upstairs. The alligator now resides, temporarily, at the Carthage Humane Society until a permanent home is found.

Authorities speculate that the alligator may have been purchased as a baby from a pet store.

There was no report as to the status of the person who apparently suffered a gunshot wound, and for whom police originally responded.
