Roof Coatings Provide Summer Heat Solutions

Kansas City, MO - Extreme summer heat is costly-in both energy and human terms. Strained by rising energy costs, companies and individuals ardently seek ways to keep cool and save money. Simultaneously, “green” and sustainable energy solutions are in demand.

The radically higher cost of fuel is forcing building owners, facilities managers, architects and contractors to seek innovative ways to reduce costs while securing environmentally responsible construction and maintenance solutions. One simple, cost-effective solution is to build or retrofit a commercial or residential building using reflective roof coating technology.

Reflective roof coatings provide the functional and environmental benefits that the public now demands. On a hot, sunny summer day, traditional roofing materials may reach peak temperatures of up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit (88 degrees Centigrade). By comparison, cool roofs only reach peak temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Centigrade), a reduction of over 30% versus the non-coated surfaces. The effects of heat are perilous, and can be mitigated with a simple change in the type of roof coatings employed.

Beyond the science, reflective roof coatings have real, tangible benefits-for building owners and residents, alike. A reflective roof coating applied to a commercial or residential building roof will provide:

--Reduced energy usage, which translates to lower peak utility rates for businesses, saving utilities the burden of unanticipated demand, or even blackouts in extreme high-demand periods
--Lower cooling costs, because the building maintains a more stable temperature
--A cooler commercial building interior, which translates to better employee morale and increased productivity
--A cooler interior in a residential building, reducing the need for air conditioning or fans-often saving lives when city buildings are no longer “ovens”
--Extended roof life-often five to ten years of additional life, depending on the condition of the roof when the coating is applied
--Reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions created in production processes by reducing the amount of roofing material required over the life of a roof
--Environmentally responsible materials, and reduced landfill waste-roofing waste accounts for up to 20% of landfill content.
